Sparking Young Imaginations to Win the Future

On January 25, 2011 in his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama challenged Americans to “Win the Future.” President of Echelon Press, Karen L. Syed, has accepted the challenge by developing a new program for Quake, a division of Echelon Press designed specifically for young readers. President Obama’s address focused largely on what we, as Americans, can do to improve our country and invest in the future by increasing the levels of education. Ms. Syed is approaching his ideas to focus on science and math from a different angle. No American can go on to excel in either of these areas if they cannot read.

All over, American children are crying out, “I don’t like to read!” Many of them simply cannot read. On March 1, 2011, Echelon Press will launch ‘Electric Shorts‘ for reluctant readers.

Electric Shorts is a pilot program for reluctant readers. Each series contains six short stories presented once per month as electronic downloads (eBooks), much the same as a television series. Geared for kids between the ages of seven and seventeen, each short story will include relevant material to attract and captivate the young and reluctant reader. From historical settings to future fantasy, across all genres, Electric Shorts will strive to satisfy all interests.

By publishing the Electric Shorts as eBooks we can cut back our contribution of paper waste and perhaps save a few trees while we’re at it,” says Karen Syed. Echelon Press has been offering their titles as eBooks since the company formed in February 2001. “No heavy books to carry, nothing to clutter the shelves, and eBooks really are cool,” Syed says.

A group of authors from America, Canada, and teh UK have signed on to the project. The Electric Shorts will be released every Tuesday, with a new installment of each series appearing once a month. At only $.99 each, the short stories are affordable for all walks of life. Once the pilot program proves successful, Echelon will open to general submissions for the new imprint. Plans to create affiliate programs with schools and other literacy advocates are in the works, including a summer reading program to keep kids on track during vacation.

To obtain a complete listing of authors, concepts, and series please contact Echelon Press.

For advance review copies and requests for interviews and author events for any of the participating authors, contact Karen L. Syed at Echelon Press echelonpress@gmail.com.

Totally Buzzed

Trouble seems to follow Buzz Miller, and this time it finds her outside the town of White Bass Lake, Wisconsin, where the dead body of a neighbor woman turns up stashed under her mother’s house! The retired detective is reluctantly roped into finding out “who dunnit.”

In order to snag the bad guy, Buzz, along with her Biology teacher sister Mag, “The Maggot” Miller, have only to find the murderer by following the trail of a dead horse, uncovering the illegal importation of rare plants, breaking up an international drug trafficking ring, uncovering a designer drug lab, and avoid being bumped off by the bad guys.

Simple enough, right? That is, until her mom’s wacky “Geriatric S.W.A.T. Team” cronies turn the crime scene into a neighborhood barbeque and Buzz’s 160 pound Newfoundland chews up most of her initial investigation!

After a shoot out at the Not-So-OK-Corral, Buzz has to explain to Sheriff Green why his only solid suspect was now pushing up daisies while lying dead in the petunias!

Gale Borger has been involved in law enforcement for over 20 years. This gives her an endless source of background material for her books. Growing up in a screwball household also gives her a sense for the zany and the bizarre. Gale writes what she knows, and she knows bad guys and funny stuff—but not necessarily in that order!

Gale lives in Southeastern Wisconsin with her husband and daughter, a Dogue de Bordeaux, two cats, about 1500 tropical fish, an African Horned Toad, a side-neck turtle, two dwarf hamsters, and a leopard gecko.

When Gale is not writing, she and her husband breed and swap tropical fish. Gale is also a Master Gardener and after work can usually be found in a flower bed up to her ears in weeds, or volunteering at a local gardening event.

Totally Buzzed is the first book in the Miller Sisters Mysteries.

A Beacon in the…well whenever!

For nearly a decade I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Pamela Ripling aka Anne Carter. I may wax on a bit about her, but in all honestly, she is one of the neatest people I know. We ended up friends after meeting at a romance convention and I have never been sorry a day since. Our acquaintance eventually developed into a professional relationship when Echelon Press began publishing Pam’s short stories. We then took on Pam’s larger works. Since then we have published numerous stories by her, as well as three novels, Point Surrender, Cape Secuction, and her young reader novel Locker Shock!

Today is the final stop on Pam’s Blog Tour and I thought we would do something a little different. I am going to post a series of questions here for Pam, and I am going to entice her to hop on in here and answer them. I assure you she has not seen these questions, so her answers will have to be honest and off the cuff. So, here we go.

  1. We know that you love lighthouses and are becomming quite an expert on them, with all your travels and adventures to the lighthouses you write about. I would like for you to give us a snippett of one of your personal fantasies regarding any lighthouse. Nothing wild and outrageous, but I now you well enough to know there is something you would love to do.
  2. What is the one story that has stuck in your mind forever that you would love to write, but just haven’t been able to pull it all together to get it on paper. or screen?
  3. I have places in my mind that are very special to me, kind of inspirational places. If you could run away for a month, 30 days, where would you go, what would you do, and why there?
  4. What have been your best and worst experiences since becoming a published author?

Okay, that is all I wanna know for now, but perhaps if anyone else has any questions they will pop in and ask you here.

**For those of you who are not aware, Pam has written two novels in her Beacon Street series. Point Surrender and Cape Seduction are both set at beautiful lighthouses. I whink everyone should read them. I promise you won’t be disapointed. And since you took the time to read this post, I would like to give you a special treat.

If you order directly from Echelon Press, you will get both books for the special price of $20.00 and this includes shipping. That is a great savings of at least $8.00! Send your order and PayPal payment to pay.echelon@gmail.com and we will mail you your set!

You can also get Pam’s books at Kindle, Amazon.com, and OmniLit.

Point Surrender:

Amy Winslow isn’t looking for a mystery; she doesn’t even like secrets. In fact, secrets have nearly destroyed her life. So, when a terrible accident forces her to take control of her brother’s mysterious California lighthouse, Amy finds herself immersed in its shocking past and uncertain future. Enchanted by the mystery, she refuses to rest until she finds out who died in the aging white beacon, and why.

Case McKenna hasn’t quite reconciled his own painful history when he sails his crippled boat into Newburg Harbor, intending to stay only long enough to make repairs. His plans change when he becomes entangled with a local couple intent on restoring a long-shuttered lighthouse. Despite an overwhelming urge to flee, Case follows intrigue and passion, as he, too, finds himself drawn in by Point Surrender…

Cape Seduction:

After being the backdrop for 1948′s critically acclaimed tragic romance, Cape Seduction, Northern California’s Dragon Rock Lighthouse sat shuttered and abandoned for decades-and it also happened to be the last place up-and-coming Hollywood starlet Darla Foster was seen alive. When photojournalist Rebecca Burke locks horns with Los Angeles attorney Matt Farralone while trying to gain access to the derelict off-shore beacon, she encounters the spirit of the sassy, once-promising Oscar-hopeful Foster, and uncovers a 60-year-old secret that sets her world on end.

A Dirty Way to Die

You think you’ve got problems?

Sherman “Manny” Shepherd, P.I. has always been plagued by Shepherd’s Luck, an ability to sense when bad shit is about to happen. His most recent bout hits just before he sits down with his Vietnam vet buddy, Marty, and watches as Marty’s girlfriend Rita Hayward gets slammed to death in the mud by a well-stacked gal calling herself Screaming Eagle.

Mired in shock, guilt, and a drunken haze, Marty coerces Manny, a local private eye with little on his plate, to figure out why Rita died in front of an SRO crowd watching and cheering at Peoria’s Heart of Illinois fair. After all, back in earlier days at Neelys Landing, Missouri, Rita was a star gymnast. So how could a simple Judo throw have killed her?

No way is Manny going to jeopardize his tenuous, yet sensual relationship, with Tazewell County’s District Attorney, Lisa Shelton, to hang around half-naked, oiled-bodied beauties with names like Virgin Witch, Passion Queen, Midnight Fire, and Holy Terror, just to find out the obvious–Princess Lay-ya aka Rita Hayward just took a bad…okay, seriously bad header.

But after hearing Marty’s heart-wrenching story of Rita’s journey to professional mud wrestler fame, and the haunting image of Rita’s single staring dead eye watching him, Manny decides to take the leap onto the St. Louis Slingers on-tour bus. Shepherd’s Luck bites him again, this time amidst boobs and bullets while he hunts down a scheming, sadistic killer.
